How ACRE started
During the early 1980s an informal group of Provincial Directors of Education emerged and began to meet twice a year.

Agreement on Internal Trade
In 1994, with the advent of the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) signed by the federal, provincial, and territorial governments, a more formal structure of ACRE was necessary.

Education Directors Work Group
In 1994, a Work Group was established to respond to the AIT requirements and to establish minimum education standards. In January 1999, this Work Group officially became ACRE.
